Milt Ezzard, Sr. Director of Global Benefits,
Activision Blizzard

Think of five of the most popular video games in the world. Chances are, Activision Blizzard’s “Call of Duty”, “World of Warcraft”, and “Candy Crush” made your list. With nearly 500 million monthly active users in 196 countries, Activision Blizzard is the world’s largest standalone interactive entertainment company. What’s the secret behind their creative excellence and commercial success? Activision Blizzard goes above and beyond to take care of their people.

Consistently named one of Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For”, Activision Blizzard has earned a reputation for putting their people first. One of the fundamental pillars of that promise is the team’s thoughtful approach to health benefits. From plans that meet their employees at different points in their lives, to a wide variety of health and wellness programs, the company has long been at the forefront of benefits leadership and innovation. According to Activision Blizzard’s Sr. Director of Global Benefits Milt Ezzard, it comes down to the team’s philosophy: “Bottom line, we’re just passionate about getting benefits right for our people.”

Despite the team’s focus, they struggled to deliver the kind of member experience they thought their people deserved. “We offer great benefits, but when an employee has to go to multiple places for information or has to talk to an unhelpful customer service rep on the phone, it can be really frustrating. Those lackluster experiences can completely derail all of the great work that our Benefits team has done,” said Milt. “It’s not enough to just put the right programs in place–you also have to optimize the experience.”

Time for a different approach

Activision Blizzard came to Collective Health looking for a data-driven approach that would maximize their benefits investment and improve their people’s overall healthcare experience.

“Collective Health offers a contemporary health benefits infrastructure that is able to use the data that’s surrounding us in the healthcare space and leverage it in a way that is new and exciting to us,” said Milt. Combining technology, design, and humans, Collective Health’s holistic approach is bringing Activision Blizzard’s benefits goals to life.

In his view, “Collective Health has the technology and vision to not only take Activision Blizzard’s benefits to the next level, but to change the world of healthcare delivery.”

How Collective Health is making a difference

Activision Blizzard introduced Collective Health to their people in the fall of 2015, with the new plans going live January 1, 2016. “Collective Health is now at the center of our strategy, and it’s making a great impact on our business and our people,” said Milt.

How Collective Health is making a difference for Activision Blizzard:

  1. Delivering concierge-level service that puts their members first
  2. Enabling cost-effective strategies across medical, pharmacy, dental, and vision benefits
  3. Providing data and insights to maximize their investment
  4. Streamlining operations to improve their team’s day-to-day workflow

01Concierge-level service

Collective Health’s dedicated Member Advocate team serves as a single point of contact for all Activision Blizzard member inquiries across medical, pharmacy, dental, and vision benefits, as well as the company’s health and wellness programs. “Collective Health’s Member Advocate team is awesome,” said Milt. “When a member reaches out to a Member Advocate over the phone or by email about a service, that same Member Advocate follows up a week later to ask how it went. That shocks our members. It really amazes and delights them.”

02Cost-effective strategies

By switching to Collective Health, Activision Blizzard was able to confidently adopt cost-effective strategies and new partnerships across their medical, pharmacy, vision, and dental benefits, without compromising their member experience. “We expect our new comprehensive approach and partnerships to save us around $1 million, and our people are getting a better benefits experience than ever before,” said Milt. “That’s not something you see every day in the healthcare industry.”

03Data and insights

Collective Health gives Milt and his team access to real-time data to show how the plan is performing. “We used to have to wait six to eight weeks following the close of a period for financial results,” said Milt. “Now I can track our spend in real-time on my Collective Health employer portal, and the reporting we receive on top of that is head and shoulders above anything I’ve ever seen in benefits.”

In addition to tracking financials, Collective Health’s contemporary benefits infrastructure will arm Milt with the data he needs to maximize engagement across his programs. “We now have the technology that allows us to meet a member where they are and provide them solutions at the right time,” said Milt. “I believe that the power Collective Health has with data has the potential to dramatically impact people’s lives.”

04Streamlining operations

Since implementation, Collective Health has saved Milt and his team an average of 20 hours of work a week, allowing them to focus on delivering an exceptional employee benefits experience. “What used to be stuck in very manual processes, or managed on Excel spreadsheets, is much more automated now with Collective Health’s operational support,” said Milt. Specifically, Collective Health has streamlined the funding of HSAs, vendor invoicing, and eligibility file consolidation across all of Activision Blizzard’s programs.
